The Edinburgh Map Task Corpus is an rigorous design which
is carefully balanced to allow controlled comparison of
- Instruction Giver/Instruction Follower
- Familiarity
- Eye-Contact
- Order of presentation of landmarks
The design is also influenced by a desire to test out specific
theories about phonetic reduction. Not everything in the
design panned out.
Some studies which had been planned proved impossible to
carry out once the corpus was in because the linguistic
phenomena did not occur sufficiently frequently.
