Somewhere between 700 B.C. and 500 B.C. Panini
executed
a very modern-seeming study of the (fascinating) phonetics of
Sanskrit.
This is the earliest known contribution to the science of linguistics
as we know it today. It is the earliest attempt to
sytematise and write down the rules of a language.
