Efficient retrieval of (parts of) XML documents in persistent XML databases requires dedicated index structures. The direct application of traditional index structures from relational or object-oriented approaches proved to be problematic in an XML context due to the irregularity of XML documents. This project investigates index structures and their practical behaviour.
